These coverages are intended to make you whole and will pay the same damages you
are entitled to recover from the negligent party. UM and UIM motorist coverage pays for
medical bills, funeral expenses, lost wages and the pain-and-suffering of the accident
victims.
Uninsured motorist coverage is one of the most important coverages on your policy
because of it's broad range of protection. It's protection covers you, your family
members residing with you and the passengers in your car when you are involved with
an uninsured motorist or a hit and run motorist. It will cover you and family members as pedestrians if you are struck by a hit and run (even "miss and run") motor vehicle or an
uninsured motor vehicle.
UM coverage also applies to you as a passenger in someone else's car if they are
uninsured or involved in an accident with someone who has no insurance. Attorney Jim

UNDER-INSURED MOTORIST
By law uninsured motorist coverage includes underinsured motorist insurance. An
underinsured motorist is someone who causes an accident but his insurance is not
sufficient to fully compensate the victims of the accident. Rhode Island residents are
required to obtain motor vehicle insurance with limits in the amount of $25,000 per
person, $50,000 per accident. When several people are injured in the same accident the
minimum coverage can be quickly exhausted. That's when it becomes necessary to
collect from your under-insured coverage of any applicable policies. Again this coverage
also applies to you and family members as pedestrians as well as passengers in your
vehicle.
